Curriculum Evaluation
The following projects for the 6th ICA SAE Medium Term Plan were approved at the meeting of the Section for Archival Education and Training in Sevilla, 25th September, 2000. The Section aims to complete all projects within the four-year term. These projects were endorsed because they:
- provide useful tools for all Section members;
- improve communication with and between archival educators and trainers around the world;
- serve the wider community of archival educators and trainers.
ICA/SAE website
Project leader: Karsten Uhde
Project team members: All members of the ICA SAE Steering Committee
The Section has had difficulty in the past in getting access to the ICA homepage and posting information on the ICA-SAE page there. However, the new Steering Committee considers it important to use a webpage as the principal means of ensuring timely communication with Section members and the wider community of archival educators and trainers. Dr Uhde met with Marcel Caya, who will be responsible for ICA websites and discussed this problem.
The project is now under way. Dr Uhde has successfully applied for the URL: www.ica-sae.org and the website, which will be linked to the ICA homepage, is under construction. The ICA-SAE website will be used to provide:
- information about the Section. Information currently provided through the ICA SAE Information Sheet will be updated and presented on the website;
- information about projects of the current Medium Term Plan, including progress reports by project leaders;
- ICA-SAE products, such as the Directory of Archival Educators and Trainers, the Training the Trainer Resource Pack and the Research Agenda will be published on the website (see below for details of these projects);
- links to websites of interest. There will be a link to the Research Database. Members will be invited to add links to their educational or training institutions. ARMA and IRMT have been informally invited to add links to the website, and will be sent a formal invitation. The ICA Training Committee has been invited to use the website for its projects and products.
Directory of Archival Educators and Trainers
Project leader: Feng Huiling
Project team members: Wang Jian, Catherine Merot and Heather MacNeil
It is now ten years since the first directory of schools and courses for professional education and training for archivists was published. The directory will be updated and expanded to include training institutions, but will no longer include curriculum details. English will be the standard language for the Directory. The ICA Training Committee has accepted an invitation to work with the ICA Section for Archival Education and Training on this project.
A questionnaire will be designed and evaluated, then sent to as widely as possible to archival education and training institutions, including all ICA SAE and ICA Training Committee members.
It is proposed that the project will be completed in two years and the directory will then be published on the ICA-SAE website and available in hard copy for those users who do not have access to the internet.
Distance Education
Project leader: Caroline Williams
Project team members: Margaret Crockett, Karen Anderson and Anne Gilliland-Swetland
In response to growth in provision of open and distance learning programmes internationally, a survey of the current state of distance education for archives and records management will be conducted and a report of the findings will be published. There is a need amongst educators and potential students for easily accessible information on individual programmes. Benefits for current and future providers may be gained by a global approach to many conceptual and practical issues.
Findings will be analysed to provide;
- a background to development in the sector;
- an assessment of different models and types of delivery;
- generic guidelines for future providers;
- a bibliography.
Training the Trainer Resource Pack
Project leader: Margaret Crockett
Project team members: Janet Foster. Others to be identified. The ICA Training Committee has expressed interest in co-operating in publication of this project.
This project will develop and publish a pack of material that can be adapted by archives and records management trainers to teach others how to train. It will be produced in both electronic and paper formats. The electronic version will be down-loadable from the ICA-SAE website and the paper version made available through the ICA’s usual channels.
Regional Conferences for Archival Educators and Trainers
Following ICA’s increasing emphasis on the developing world, a series of regional conferences will be organised by Steering Committee members for educators and trainers in the field of archives and records management. This project was proposed by Margaret Crockett, who will offer support in programme development. To date, four such conferences have been proposed:
1. European Conference for Archival Education and Training
Conference Organisers: Margaret Crockett, Karsten Uhde and Joso Ivanovic
This will be the first conference in the series. It will take place in Marburg in association with the next meeting of the Steering Committee in June 2001. The programme will be designed with Eastern/Central European educators and trainers in mind.
2. Asian Conference Archival Education and Training
Conference Organisers: Feng Huiling, Hideyuki Aoyama and Wang Jian.
3. South American Conference for Archival Education and Training
Conference Organisers: Silvia Schenkolevski-Kroll and Mariza Bonnino.
4. Australian Conference for Archival Education and Training
Conference Organisers: Karen Anderson and Ann Pederson
This conference will take place in 2002 in conjunction with a Steering Committee Meeting in Perth, Western Australia.
A North American Conference has been suggested but is unconfirmed at this stage.
Continuing Projects
The following are continuations or further developments of projects commenced during the 5th Medium Term Plan:
Research Agenda
Project leader: Ann Pederson
Project team members: Anne Gilliland-Swetland and Karen Anderson
Work continues, with the aim of identifying research needs and including as many planned research projects as possible, particularly those originating outside the English-speaking world. This information will be made available on the ICA-SAE website.
Research Database
Project leader: Karen Anderson
Project team members: Ann Pederson
A database of archival researchers and their research projects and publications was designed during the 5th Medium Term Plan. The database shell has been implemented and is now available to researchers on the World Wide Web at:
The database is availiable under: >http://sciswork.scis.ecu.edu.au/icasae/index.php.
Curriculum Evaluation
Project leader: Torbjörn Kjölstad
Project team members: Members of the ICA SAE Steering Committee as appropriate, depending on requests received and availability
The Steering Committee will continue to respond to requests from archival education institutions for assistance with curriculum evaluation of existing and proposed courses.
